Understanding another person’s thoughts and emotions is an
important trait to acquire as we age. It makes a person more likable and pleasant
to be around. It can help in so many aspects of life, such as building and
maintaining relationships or even getting a job. This characteristic is vital for
the profession many of us are choosing. Working in healthcare requires constant
interaction with the public. Interacting with all different walks of life and
being able to understand and build relationships with those people is a necessary
skill. An article by Psychology Today discusses research that associates
leadership and psychopathic personalities. A psychopath is someone who lacks
empathy and is very egocentric, but they are extremely skilled at reading
people and understanding a person’s perspective. This type of person is often seen in
leadership roles and higher management in companies according to the article. Having
both an ability to understand someone and sympathize with them may put a person
at a disadvantage for higher end leadership positions when competing with someone
with the same ability but lacks compassion for others.
