Understanding
that other people have their own mind, feelings, perceptions, and beliefs may
be one of the most important skills a person can possess. It is impossible
to live in today's society and never interact with other people. Often the
people who are the most successful socially are those with the most
understanding of other people's feelings and beliefs. Understanding why someone
lies to you or harms you is a lot easier when you can see the situation from
their perspective. You may even find that the issues you have with other people
stem from a lack of understanding from one side, the other, or both.
Alternatively, I would argue that it is important to understand other people's
thoughts, ideas and beliefs to protect yourself. Just because you a trustworthy
person does not make everyone trustworthy. You risk other people exploiting you
if you blindly assume that everyone is the same and thinks the same way as you.
Jeramiah,
ReplyDeleteYou bring up two very interesting concepts with this idea. I agree with you that you will never be able to achieve true forgiveness if you don't try to understand the perspective of another person. However, I never considered the alternative that understanding that people have unique thoughts would make you unwilling to trust others. When I first thought of the concept of “theory of mind”, I associated it with empathy. It’s very interesting to consider this idea that you would be able to understand that not all people are trustworthy. Good job on this article.
